Defiance

Captain blue eyes is back. Yes, by that I mean Daniel Craig. The dude has freaky blue eyes. Now I’m not sure if they are naturally that blue, but it seems any movies he is in, they seem to be stupidly blue. It makes me wonder if they give him contacts to put in just so they can do panning shots on his eyes.

Moving on from my short spiel about his blue eyes, Defiance is a true story about the Bielski brothers, four Jewish brothers from Poland that escape Nazi persecution, fight back and rescue fellow Jews. In the process of this, they flee to the forest where they create a hidden community which eventually comes under strike from Nazi dive bombers. After this attack, the survivors escape back into the forest to live on another day. The film ends with on-screen text stating that they survived another two years, ultimately growing to a total of 1,200 Jews and where the brothers went on from there.

Overall, I thought the movie was pretty good with a rather authentic feel about it. There were some dramatic and powerful scenes, one I recall was the Nazi soldier they captured whilst on patrol. He was presumably beaten to death by a group of Jews who clubbed him with the ends of their rifles in anger and retaliation for the deaths of their loved ones.

I did feel the movie was a bit slow with action scenes in small spurts here and there. The movie is a good display of the willingness and courage of people to defy the odds in order to survive. I can only imagine the horrors back then..

I was really looking forward to this movie because Edward Zwick directed it. I really enjoyed two of his previous films, The Last Samurai and Blood Diamond. But I gotta say I was disappointed with Defiance, it was just too cliched. ESPECIALLY the last scene when the brothers are reunited and he’s just mowing down Nazis with his machine gun, I lol’d in disappointment with that. Otherwise though, still good.

And indeed, Daniel Craig’s blue eyes are scary as. Reminds me of one of those spawn of satan movies from the 80s like The Omen where a blue eyed kid plays the devil.
