Some people grow out of Hip Hop and Rap.. or just move on. But I, myself can’t seem to. I don’t think ones music library should be limited to just one genre – there is too much wonderful music out there to experience, each form has its own merits.
In saying that, Rap took a pretty big hit in 1996 and 1997 when the late and great Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G were both gunned down, mysteries still unsolved today. I believe rap died then.
As I can’t shake listening to Hip Hop and Rap, I’m on a never ending search for dope albums that aren’t so mainstream, yet full of quality beats and lyrics. As such, I’ve been looking more and more into Hip Hop albums. Rap has gone on a downward spiral, fast. Now filled with commercial crap from “rappers” who have one catchy song that leaves the rest of the album sounding retarded.
Moving on – today, I came across a group called Atmosphere with Slug, who is the MC and Ant who is the producer. I’ve started off with one of their earlier albums, God Loves Ugly and I must say, these two guys pull off some great sounding tracks. I think I’ll grab When Life Gives You Lemons You Paint That Shit Gold next.
Check out the samples on Amazon if you’re into Hip Hop, you won’t be disappointed.

Wanna know some crazy trivia? Mickey Rourke and Tupac Shakur used to be very close friends, how random is that. I don’t listen to any rap or r’n'b or hip hop anymore, I think it was all too traumatic as a teenager. These days I am purely a Triple J listener. Some recommendations I reckon you’d be into: MGMT, PNAU, The Streets, Dizzee Rascal(?), and as for Aussie hip hop bands there are The Herd, Hilltop Hoods, Bliss N Eso, Lupe Fiasco
Yeah, probably would of been due to ‘Pac and Mickey working together in the movie ‘Bullet’. The Streets is pretty cool, although I haven’t gotten into his stuff much. Bliss N Eso are good as well, one of their latest albums ‘Day Of The Dog’ was awesome, love the track “Then Till Now”.
Yeah, checkout: Dizzee Rascal – Dance Wiv Me – pretty cool track. And speaking of Mickey Rourke have you seen The Wrestler yet?
